Contributors: vicespin, JoeHemi. This article applies to the Dodge Ram 3rd Generation (2002-2008) The EGR valve is an electronic solenoid that moves a pintle, opening and closing a passageway for exhaust gas to flow through. The valve is bolted to the intake manifold/cylinder head and a metal hose connects it to the exhaust manifold/intake
6. Knocking Sound. Another symptom is the knocking sound of the engine. If your EGR valve is stuck in a closed position, the temperature inside the combustion chamber will be too high. And this ultimately leads to fuel igniting too early when the engine is at low RPM, causing the knocking sound from the engine.

Transmission. Automatic. May 18, 2015. #3. RonD said: P0401 is almost always the DPFE starting to fail, looks can be deceiving. Here is how the EGR system works so you can eliminate other possibilities before replacing the DPFE. There are 3 parts for the EGR system, not counting the computer (PCM) 1.
The EGR system is electronically controlled. A proportional electric motor. controlled directly by a duty-cycle signal. from the powertrain control module operates the valve. Integrated into the EGR valve is a valve position sensor. The signal from the EGR valve position sensor. allows for the precise control of the timing.
The DPFE sensor is by the EGR valve, it will have one connector and two silicone hoses attached to it, the other ends of the hoses attaches to the EGR tube (from manifold to EGR valve). Verify both hoses are attached and not broken or split. Verify the connector is OK/properly connected, no pins are pushed out/no corrosion/water intrusion etc.

1. Coolant Leakage. A coolant leak in the Ecoboost engine is caused by a design flaw that causes coolant or antifreeze to be used up very quickly. This leak allows coolant to enter into combustion cylinders of the engine. In many cases, it could lead to total engine failure.
Remove the old EGR valve by loosening the bolts and nuts that secure it to the intake manifold using a socket wrench. Keep these fasteners – you might need to reuse them. 2. Remove the Old Gasket. Take off the old gasket using a scraper or knife carefully. Make sure not to damage the intake manifold or the valve.
